Images uploaded to github wiki are not accessible - 404

Something weird is going on with images uploaded to github wiki with drag&drop action. The wiki page shows

Failed to load resource: the server responded with a status of 404

But if I go to the page editor > preview they are there, I can see them.
When I rolled back some commits (not related to said images at all) and force pushed with git, images came back for some time but they are gone again now.

EDIT: when I make any change to the wiki the images come back for some time, but they disappear later on.

Yes, this is very annoying. However if I edit the wiki entry, hit Preview, it gets fixed (for all users!) for a while then it breaks again.

Someone on a Reddit group said Github are moving the copy & pasted images to a private storage area so users don't treat it like an image-hosting site. I get an error "This private-user-images.githubusercontent.com page can’t be found". This error comes and goes which may indicate it has something to do with cacheing.

What I find odd about the basic approach is that none of the images appear to be navigable through a directory -- so many times I snap and paste a wrong image and then delete the link, assuming it's getting stored permanently but never to be seen again by anybody. Github must have some sort of algorithm to find images that aren't being actively linked by a page otherwise they're wasting so much space. I imagine I make mistakes every several attempts, sometimes just because I don't quite like the way I cropped a graph.

This is obviously a bug. A public wiki should not treat images as private or there should be some clear guidelines on how to upload images then properly. The way that now it seemingly works then after a while the images just disappear is super confusing.

If I edit the wiki I can see the original urls. Opening them makes them visible in the wiki. But I also noticed that some of the urls are changed for example:

Gave me a scare -- went to look and the image links shown as broken, then they appeared after a refresh. Possible that the backend is reconfiguring the locations of the images trying to fix whatever the problem is.

Edit: As noted by @kittenarmy, the image url changes all by itself from private link to public url. Editing the page seems to work as a trigger to get the images working again but that workaround only works for a while before it flips by itself again to private.

If the intent is to allow cross-site posting of images, then they wouldn't have labeled it as "private". So I don't think this policy will change -- storage is fine but bandwidth is the issue?

I cloned my wiki repo locally, added those images, and pushed them back to the repo. Why they sometimes show up under a private link and sometimes show up normally makes zero sense whatsoever if they are going to allow wiki images in the first place.
