A command-line tool to generate new Zsh plugins.
This tool scaffolds Zsh plugins with best practices built-in, including function tracking for clean unloading, optional alias support, autoloaded functions, and CI/CD workflows for shellcheck and shellspec. Choose from minimal, simple, or complete templates to match your plugin's complexity.
❱ cargo install zsh-plugin❱ zsh-plugin --help
A command-line tool to generate new Zsh plugins.
Usage: zsh-plugin [OPTIONS] <COMMAND>
Commands:
init Initialize a new Zsh plugin structure
help Print this message or the help of the given subcommand(s)
Options:
-v, --verbose... Increase logging verbosity
-q, --quiet... Decrease logging verbosity
-h, --help Print help
-V, --version Print versionInitialize a new Zsh plugin structure in the directory zsh-NAME-plugin.
The resulting plugin contains the following content.
-
A file
NAME.plugin.zshwhich consists of the main plugin logic including support for autoloaded functions in thefunctionsdirectory, or (ifno-functions-diris set) functions defined inline. Function_NAME_remember_fnkeeps track of all plugin-defined functions so they can be unset during the functionNAME_plugin_unload. Similarly, a function_NAME_define_aliasis included, unlessno-aliasesis set, that both defines the alias and keeps track of all plugin-defined aliases so they can be unset during the functionNAME_plugin_unload. A functionNAME_plugin_initis included, unless bothno-functions-dirandno-bin-dirare set, which sets up the correspondingFPATHandPATHvariables. Finally, the functionNAME_plugin_unloadis defined and contains the logic to unfunction all the remembered functions, unalias all the remembered aliases, remove entries fromFPATHandPATHand unset the global associative array variable. -
If the option
add-bash-wrapperis defined, a fileNAME.bashis included which provides an entry point for Bash users to load the plugin. -
A directory
.github/workflowsand a Github Actions script namedshell.ymlto automate shellcheck and shellspec. Generation can be skipped if theno-github-diroption is checked or both the optionsno-shell-checkandno-shell-specare set as the workflow has nothing to do. -
A directory
functionswith an example autoloaded function namedNAME_example. Generation can be skipped if theno-functions-diroption is set. -
If the option
add-bin-dir is set an emptybin` directory for plugin specific binaries is created. -
A file
.gitignore. Generation can be skipped if both the optionsno-shell-checkandno-shell-spec. -
A directory
docand shell scriptmkdoc.zsh. Generation can be skipped if theno-shell-docoption is set. -
A file
Makefilefor GNU Make. Generation can be skipped if the optionsno-shell-check,no-shell-doc, andno-shell-specare all true. -
A file
README.mdcontaining only a basic skeleton. Generation can be skipped if theno-readmeis set.
Rather than setting all options manually, three templates are provided with pre-defined selection of settings. These are described in the table below.
